In a horrifying escalation of violence in Nigeria’s northwest, no fewer than 15 people have been gruesomely killed after suspected Lakurawa terrorists launched a brutal attack on Kwalajiya village, located in the Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers stormed the peaceful agrarian community while many villagers were either working on their farms or observing prayers.
Without warning, the terrorists opened fire, spraying bullets indiscriminately at anyone in sight. In what residents have described as “a blood-soaked nightmare,” men, women, and even children were not spared.
The bloodshed unfolded under the blistering sun as terrified farmers and worshippers ran for their lives, some gunned down mid-sprint.
Survivors recounted hearing “nonstop gunfire” that lasted for hours, while the assailants reportedly torched farmlands and looted homes before retreating into the surrounding forests.
A local source said, “They came on motorcycles in large numbers. They didn’t even speak—they just started shooting. We’ve counted 15 corpses so far, but many more are missing.”
This attack comes on the heels of a series of raids attributed to Lakurawa, a deadly splinter faction of armed bandits operating across northern Nigeria, notorious for targeting farming communities, kidnapping for ransom, and killing indiscriminately.
Sokoto State authorities have confirmed the attack, stating that security operatives have been deployed to the area, although no arrests have been made yet. Grief-stricken families are now left to bury their loved ones as fear spreads among neighboring villages.
As the nation reels from this latest tragedy, many Nigerians are once again questioning the government’s grip on national security, especially in rural communities that remain vulnerable to terror groups and banditry.
This chilling incident has reignited calls for decisive military action against terror cells in Sokoto and beyond, with citizens pleading, “Enough is enough—how many more must die before something is done?”
