Gusau has been thrown into deep mourning as news broke of the death of its revered traditional ruler, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, the 16th Emir of Gusau, who passed away at the age of 71 in Abuja following a prolonged illness.

Appointed Emir in 2015, Dr. Bello's reign spanned nearly a decade, during which he was widely celebrated for his wisdom, humility, and commitment to peace and development in Zamfara State. Prior to ascending the throne, he had a distinguished career as a civil servant, serving as Permanent Secretary in various federal ministries, and earning a reputation for excellence in governance.

The palace confirmed that the Emir had been battling an undisclosed illness for months and had been receiving treatment in the Federal Capital Territory until his passing on Friday. His death has left a vacuum in the state’s traditional and spiritual leadership, with dignitaries and citizens alike paying emotional tributes to his legacy.

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, in a heartfelt statement, described the late monarch as “a father figure, a beacon of wisdom, and a steady voice of unity in turbulent times.” He praised Dr. Bello’s role in maintaining calm during periods of security unrest in the state, as well as his unrelenting efforts to foster reconciliation and socio-economic growth within the Gusau emirate.

Flags have been ordered to fly at half-mast across the state, and arrangements for a state-backed burial are already underway, in accordance with Islamic rites.

Dr. Ibrahim Bello is survived by wives, children, and grandchildren. His death marks the end of an era — one defined by patience, dignity, and service to the people.

May his soul rest in peace.
