In a dramatic political twist that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement, made during a press briefing at the Government House in Uyo, stunned party loyalists and political observers alike.
Governor Eno’s decision marks a major shift in the political dynamics of Akwa Ibom, a state that has long been considered a PDP stronghold.
“Time to Make a Progressive Move” — Eno
Speaking during the press conference, Governor Eno expressed gratitude to the PDP for the platform it provided him to serve the people of Akwa Ibom State.
However, he emphasized that the time had come for him to make a "progressive move" that aligns with the broader interests of the state and its people.
“I remain grateful to the PDP, the party that gave me the opportunity to serve. However, after wide consultations with stakeholders, elders, and citizens, I have decided to join the APC to ensure Akwa Ibom remains at the center of national development conversations,” Eno said.
Governor Eno also acknowledged the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he described as a visionary and pragmatic leader.
According to the governor, his admiration for Tinubu’s style of governance and national focus played a significant role in his decision.
Governor Eno’s defection is being seen by political analysts as a strategic realignment aimed at ensuring Akwa Ibom State does not remain politically isolated from the central government.
He noted that by joining the APC, the state stands a better chance of attracting federal projects, support, and funding.
“We must position ourselves where decisions are being made. Our people deserve the dividends of democracy that come from working closely with the federal government,” Eno said.
He reassured the people of Akwa Ibom that the decision was not made out of personal interest, but out of a genuine desire to advance the developmental goals of the state.
The governor’s move has sparked mixed reactions across the state and beyond. While some PDP loyalists expressed disappointment, others acknowledged the political realities of the moment.
In a swift response, the APC national leadership welcomed Governor Eno into the party fold, describing his defection as a “bold and patriotic move.”
APC Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje noted that the governor’s decision was a testament to the increasing acceptance of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
The PDP, on the other hand, has not yet released an official statement but insiders say the party is in emergency talks to prevent a further wave of defections in the South-South region.
Governor Eno’s defection to the APC has undoubtedly reshaped the political map of Akwa Ibom State and may influence future elections in the region.
As the 2027 general elections loom on the horizon, political analysts are watching closely to see whether this move will strengthen the APC’s grip or cause deeper internal fractures within both parties.
One thing is certain: with Governor Umo Eno now flying the APC flag, Akwa Ibom politics may never be the same again.
