busterblog - BREAKING: Lagos Government Shuts Down Global International College Over Dangerous Waste Discharge in Lekki

The Lagos State Government has sealed off Global International College, located in Ikate-Elegushi, Lekki, for allegedly discharging untreated faecal sludge and wastewater directly into public drains—an act the authorities have condemned as a serious threat to public health and the environment.

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) carried out the enforcement on Thursday, citing multiple violations of environmental laws and health codes.

The agency stated that the school’s actions posed a grave danger to surrounding communities, especially in a densely populated area like Lekki.

“It is unacceptable for any institution—especially an educational one—to channel raw sewage into public infrastructure. This endangers lives, contaminates water sources, and compromises our environment,” a LASEPA spokesperson said.

Officials confirmed that environmental monitoring teams discovered raw, untreated human waste being discharged into open drainage, leading to widespread contamination of nearby surfaces and a risk of airborne diseases.

Residents had reportedly complained of a persistent foul smell and suspected leakages near the school prior to the investigation.

The incident has triggered outrage from local residents and environmental advocates, many of whom are demanding stiff penalties for the school's management.

Social media users also expressed disbelief, questioning how a prestigious institution could operate under such unhygienic conditions.

“This is supposed to be a reputable international school. If this is what they do behind the scenes, what are they teaching the students?” a concerned parent posted online.

The state government has assured that the school will remain sealed until it fully complies with sanitation standards, sets up proper waste treatment systems, and receives environmental clearance.

This incident adds to the growing list of high-profile establishments recently sanctioned by LASEPA as Lagos intensifies its zero-tolerance campaign against environmental abuse across the state.

The message from the authorities is loud and clear: no institution is above the law when it comes to safeguarding public health.
