In a major immigration policy shift, the United Kingdom has officially announced that international students — including Nigerians — can now switch directly from a Student Visa to an Innovator Founder Visa without leaving the UK, starting November 25, 2025.
This marks a dramatic reversal of the restrictions introduced between 2023 and 2024, which previously forced students to either return home or secure alternative visa routes before applying for business-related immigration status.
Under the new policy, eligible students in UK universities will be allowed to apply for the Innovator Founder Visa, which supports graduates building high-value, scalable startups backed by approved endorsing bodies. The visa offers:
A fast track to permanent residency (ILR) after 3 years,
Permission to start and run a business in the UK,
The ability to work outside the business in certain roles,
Freedom to bring dependents under normal rules.
This update is expected to benefit thousands of Nigerian students — a group that has consistently ranked among the top foreign student populations in the UK — providing a more stable post-study pathway amid rising global competition for skilled migrants.
Immigration analysts say the move aims to stimulate entrepreneurship, attract international investment, and retain talented graduates who already understand the UK ecosystem.
Universities and student associations have welcomed the policy change, calling it a “lifeline for entrepreneurial graduates whose futures were previously uncertain.”
For many Nigerians in the UK, this could be the most significant opportunity in years to secure long-term residency through innovation, rather than relying solely on skilled worker sponsorship or returning home after studies.
