Portugal and the entire footballing world are in mourning following the tragic deaths of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva, who lost their lives in a horrific car crash in Spain on July 3, 2025.
The incident occurred near Cernadilla on the A-52 motorway, where their Lamborghini reportedly veered off the road after a suspected tire blowout and burst into flames.
Cristiano Ronaldo, the legendary captain of Portugal, led tributes with a deeply emotional message that has since flooded social media with sorrow and shock. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Ronaldo wrote:
“It doesn’t make any sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married.
To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world.
I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”
Just days before the tragedy, Diogo Jota had tied the knot with his long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, 2025, surrounded by family and teammates.
The couple shares three children. The newlywed footballer, only 28 years old, had been an integral part of Portugal’s Nations League victory earlier this year.
His younger brother André Silva, 25, was a player for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
Liverpool FC released a statement describing the loss as “unimaginable” and requested privacy for the family. UEFA, Wolves, Atlético Madrid, and former and current teammates have also poured in their condolences.
A one-minute silence will be observed before Portugal’s next Euro 2025 match, and across UEFA competitions in honor of the fallen stars.
Jota’s former teammates Jamie Carragher, Rio Ferdinand, and even tennis great Rafael Nadal and NBA superstar LeBron James expressed disbelief and heartbreak online, further underscoring the massive impact of the loss.
The tragic crash has not only robbed Portugal of one of its brightest footballing talents but also reminded the world of life’s cruel unpredictability.
Fans gathered at Anfield and Estádio do Dragão, lighting candles and laying flowers in memory of Jota and André.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s words echo the sentiment of a nation in tears — “We will all miss you.”
May their souls rest in perfect peace. 🕊️🇵🇹
