Four Killed, Over 20 Injured as Truck Loses Brakes at Eggon Carnival in Nasarawa

busterblog - Four Killed, Over 20 Injured as Truck Loses Brakes at Eggon Carnival in Nasarawa

Tragedy struck Nasarawa State on Sunday, December 28, 2025, during the annual Eggon Carnival after multiple heavy-duty trucks reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into a crowded Christmas procession, killing at least four people and leaving more than 20 others injured.

The Eggon Carnival, a colourful cultural festival held to celebrate the heritage, unity, and traditions of the Eggon ethnic group, was in full swing when the accident occurred.

Eyewitnesses said the procession, made up of dancers, masquerades, and residents dressed in vibrant traditional attire, was suddenly thrown into chaos as three trucks lost control and ploughed into the moving crowd.

An aerial image circulating online shows one of the trucks overturned amid a dense gathering of festival-goers, with panic visible as people scattered in different directions. Emergency responders and volunteers were seen rushing victims to nearby hospitals, while others attempted to rescue those trapped beneath vehicles.

Local authorities later confirmed that the incident was caused by mechanical failure, specifically brake malfunction, and not a deliberate attack. This clarification came amid a wave of online speculation and conspiracy theories, with some social media users alleging the crash was a targeted act of terrorism against Christians due to the Christmas timing of the procession. Security agencies and verified reports, however, have firmly dismissed those claims, stressing that no evidence points to sabotage or extremist involvement.

Following the incident, organizers immediately canceled the remainder of the Eggon Carnival as the community entered a period of mourning. Community leaders described the event as a dark day for the Eggon people, calling for prayers and support for the families of the victims.

The accident has once again drawn attention to Nigeria’s ongoing road safety crisis, particularly involving heavy-duty trucks.

According to international road safety data, truck-related accidents account for a significant number of fatalities annually in the country, often linked to poor vehicle maintenance, brake failure, and weak enforcement of safety regulations.

Residents and civil society groups are now urging the government to strengthen vehicle inspection systems, enforce stricter transport safety laws, and restrict the movement of heavy trucks during public gatherings and festivals to prevent similar tragedies.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting the injured, consoling grieving families, and addressing the systemic failures that turned a joyful cultural celebration into a scene of loss and heartbreak.
