Outspoken media personality and activist, Onajobi Adetoun, has once again sparked a wave of public outrage after delivering a blistering criticism of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over Nigeria’s worsening economic crisis.
In a now-viral video, Adetoun lamented the unbearable cost of living, using her recent market experience as a sobering example of how the average Nigerian is being crushed under the weight of hyperinflation:
“There’s a serious problem in Nigeria right now. The APC is already campaigning for 2027 while Nigerians are suffering. Some people can’t even afford to eat. How can someone earning ₦70,000 buy pepper for ₦55,000?”
The comment came after she reportedly bought a bag of pepper at an outrageous price, triggering a deeper conversation online about how essential food items are fast becoming luxury commodities for ordinary citizens.
Her remarks have gone viral across X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and TikTok, with hashtags like #TinubuMustAct, #70Kvs55K, and #AdetounSpeaksTruth dominating trend tables. Many Nigerians are echoing her sentiments, with users sharing their own stories of choosing between food and transportation, rent and medicine.
Adetoun didn’t stop at the economy. She also slammed the APC’s early campaign activities for the 2027 elections, questioning how a government presiding over one of the harshest economic climates in recent history could prioritize politics over citizens' survival.
> “Are we still talking about votes when people are dying of hunger? Fix the country first before you come begging again,” she said in frustration.
This isn’t Adetoun’s first time calling out government failings, but this latest outburst seems to have struck a nerve nationwide.
The gap between earnings and survival in Nigeria is now painfully wide. A monthly minimum wage of ₦30,000 or even an average income of ₦70,000 is no match for skyrocketing prices, where a bag of rice now sells above ₦80,000 and a tuber of yam hits ₦5,000 in some cities.
With food inflation at its highest in decades and government officials largely silent or evasive, Adetoun’s voice has become a rallying cry for millions who feel unseen and unheard.
As political distractions mount and economic hardship deepens, the burning question remains: How much longer can Nigerians hold on while the elite play politics?
