In a swift response to a viral video capturing Nigerian soldiers bitterly lamenting poor feeding conditions in their operational base, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media, showed visibly frustrated troops expressing their disappointment over the quality and quantity of meals provided by their operational commanders, sparking public outrage and questions about the welfare of frontline personnel.
Reacting to the development on Friday, General Oluyede described the incident as “deeply troubling and unacceptable,” emphasizing that the morale and well-being of soldiers must never be compromised, especially those risking their lives in active combat zones.
“I have directed an immediate and transparent investigation into the allegations raised in the video. Any officer found guilty of diverting resources or neglecting troop welfare will be held accountable,” the Army Chief said in a statement released by military spokesperson Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu.
While the Nigerian Army traditionally discourages personnel from addressing internal matters publicly, the tone of this latest directive indicates a shift toward institutional accountability amid growing concerns about the living conditions of soldiers battling terrorism, banditry, and insurgency across the country.
The military high command has also urged soldiers to utilize internal channels of complaint and reassured Nigerians that troops’ welfare remains a top priority.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to be made public in the coming days.
