busterblog - JUST IN: Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo Clarifies Comments on Peter Obi, Says “It Wasn't a Threat” But a Matter of Protocol

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has broken his silence over the widespread backlash trailing his recent comments regarding Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying his words were “misunderstood” and were never intended as a threat.

In a statement released this afternoon, Governor Okpebholo insisted that his remarks about Obi not being allowed into Edo State “without clearance” were strictly in line with governmental protocol and not borne out of political hostility or personal animosity.

“It was not a threat,” the governor stated firmly. “It was a simple administrative directive on issues of protocol. As a sitting governor, it is my duty to ensure that all political actors respect the established channels when entering the state for public functions. This applies to everyone, regardless of party affiliation.”

The clarification comes just days after the governor's initial comment stirred political tension, with Obi’s supporters and civil rights groups accusing Okpebholo of authoritarianism and an attempt to intimidate opposition voices ahead of the upcoming governorship elections in the state.

Governor Okpebholo, however, stressed that Edo remains a peaceful, democratic state, open to all Nigerians, but maintained that due process must be followed.

“We will not allow our state to become a ground for political chaos under the guise of campaigns or courtesy visits,” he said. “All we ask for is respect for the office of the governor and due communication before major visits.”

The Labour Party has yet to release an official response to the clarification, but insiders say Peter Obi himself is “unbothered” by the situation and remains focused on his nationwide goodwill visits and grassroots engagement tour.

Political analysts note that tensions are likely to escalate in the coming months as Edo State gears up for its high-stakes governorship election. Both the ruling APC and Labour Party have mobilized heavily, setting the stage for a fierce political showdown.

Meanwhile, some observers have advised Governor Okpebholo to tone down rhetoric and focus on issues of governance rather than becoming enmeshed in opposition drama.

As the drama unfolds, one thing is clear—Edo politics is heating up, and the nation is watching.
