A young Nigerian lady has sparked conversations online after narrating her bitter experience with a man she once admired during their talking stage.
Taking to social media, she lamented how men often put up a façade to impress women, only to reveal their true reality later.
According to her, the man had presented himself as financially comfortable, always showing up at her hostel in a car and flaunting a flashy phone. She admitted that his appearance and consistency convinced her that he was serious and stable. However, things took an unexpected turn after intimacy entered the relationship.
She explained that once they had gotten close, the man suddenly switched up, now arriving in a tricycle (keke) and using a smaller phone instead of the luxury gadget he once carried. To her, it was a shocking revelation of deception, leaving her to wonder why some men feel the need to pretend in order to win affection.
Her lamentation has since gone viral, with many young women relating to her story and pointing out how widespread “fake life” has become in modern dating culture. Some argued that the man may have only borrowed the lifestyle to secure her attention, while others suggested she should have valued his personality over his possessions.
The incident reflects a larger social trend in Nigeria’s youth dating scene, where appearance, social media influence, and perceived financial status often play a decisive role in relationships.
For critics, the lady’s story serves as a reminder of the dangers of judging a partner by material displays that may not be sustainable.
As one online user commented, “Love built on packaging will eventually crash. If you can’t be real at the beginning, what happens later?”
