Veteran Nigerian Juju maestro Sir Shina Peters has sparked waves of debate online after boldly claiming he has more “classic songs” than the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the Afro-Juju pioneer reflected on his decades-long career, stressing that true success in showbiz isn’t measured by fame or wealth but by the number of timeless records one leaves behind.
“The only thing you can show for showbiz at the end is how many evergreens you have produced,” he said. “To my credit, I have four evergreens. Even Michael Jackson has just two — ‘We Are The World’ and ‘Thriller.’ So if I have four, I am accomplished.”
Sir Shina Peters, famed for blending Fuji and Afrobeat into his signature Afro-Juju sound, stood by his conviction that longevity and cultural resonance outweigh global awards or viral hits. His assertion has since divided opinions across social media, with some fans hailing his confidence and others dismissing the comparison as audacious.
The “Ace” crooner, who dominated Nigeria’s 80s and 90s music scene with high-energy performances and evergreen hits like ‘Afro-Juju,’ ‘Ijo Shina,’ and ‘Experience,’ remains a revered figure in African music history.
While his comments have stirred playful controversy, they also highlight a deeper truth about artistic legacy — that in every generation, musicians measure greatness not just by charts, but by the songs that never fade.
