The Katsina State Government has declared Monday, July 14, 2025, a public holiday in honor of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier today.
The announcement was made via an official statement from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, confirming that the state will observe the day to mourn and pay tribute to its most prominent son, who served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023, and as a former Military Head of State from 1983 to 1985.
Buhari, who hailed from Daura in Katsina State, died at the age of 82. His death has triggered a wave of reactions across the country and beyond, with tributes pouring in from world leaders, former colleagues, and political figures from across the divide.
According to the state government, the public holiday will allow residents to participate in prayers, processions, and other remembrance activities being organized across the state, particularly in Daura, where his burial is expected to take place in accordance with Islamic rites.
Katsina Governor Dikko Umar Radda described Buhari’s passing as “a monumental loss not only to Katsina but to Nigeria and the African continent.” He urged citizens to remain peaceful and united as they remember the legacy of the late leader.
Security has reportedly been tightened in key areas of the state ahead of the anticipated influx of dignitaries, family members, and political allies arriving for the final rites.
Further details about the burial arrangements are expected to be released by the Buhari family and the Presidency later tonight.
