Nigerian professor Nchebe-Jah Iloanusi has developed a groundbreaking artificial intelligence system capable of predicting the onset of depression several days before clinical symptoms appear — a major step in tackling one of the world’s most pervasive mental health crises.

The innovation, unveiled in recent peer-reviewed publications on ResearchGate, combines data from heart rate variability, sleep patterns, and speech biomarkers captured through wearable devices and smartphones. Using transformer-based machine learning models, the AI system continuously analyzes subtle physiological and behavioral changes to detect early signs of mental health decline.

According to Iloanusi, the project aims to close a critical global gap — where more than 280 million people live with depression, yet an estimated 76% remain undiagnosed or untreated, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The model, he explained, not only enhances diagnostic precision compared to traditional self-reported methods but also integrates seamlessly with telehealth platforms for remote mental health monitoring.

While the research has earned praise for its potential to revolutionize early intervention and reduce suicide risks, experts stress that larger, multi-regional trials are required to ensure the system’s ethical, cultural, and clinical validity before wide deployment.

The announcement has drawn a wave of national pride and online celebration, especially among Nigerians who see Iloanusi’s work as proof of African excellence in global AI and health innovation. Yet, many replies on X (formerly Twitter) also reflect frustration with Nigeria’s lack of institutional support for research, lamenting how “brilliant minds have to thrive abroad because of poor leadership at home.”

Despite the challenges, Iloanusi’s invention marks a significant milestone in the fusion of AI, mental health, and human emotion, offering hope for a future where mental illnesses are detected early — not when it’s too late.
