History will forever remember Onome Ebi, the indomitable defender who became the first African to feature in six FIFA Women’s World Cups, a feat she achieved in 2023.

After two decades of wearing the green and white jersey with pride, the Super Falcons icon officially announced her retirement from professional football on September 17, 2025, drawing the curtain on one of the most remarkable careers in African women’s football.

Ebi’s journey was never ordinary. From her debut in the early 2000s to her swansong with Naija Ratels FC, the 42-year-old carved out a legacy defined by longevity, resilience, and leadership.

Her trophy cabinet tells part of the story — four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles in 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018, alongside appearances at the 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023 World Cups, a record that placed her in the global spotlight.

Her final career move, a return to Nigeria in 2023 to join Naija Ratels, was more than just a transfer. It was a statement of intent. After a decade of playing abroad in countries like Sweden and Belarus, Ebi came home to mentor the next generation, ensuring that her wealth of experience would not be lost to the exodus of talent plaguing African women’s football.

Experts say her career defies convention. A 2021 Journal of Sports Sciences study found that female athletes often sustain longer careers due to resilience and adaptability, a finding Ebi embodied with grace. While many players struggle with early burnout, she played on at the highest level well into her forties, challenging the narrative of short-lived careers in women’s football.

Yet, despite her historic achievements, her retirement has drawn limited coverage from the international media — a reflection of the enduring imbalance in global recognition between male and female athletes. For Nigerians, however, Ebi remains a symbol of determination and excellence, a captain who stood firm through victories, defeats, and generational transitions.

As fans, teammates, and the football community pay tribute, one thing is certain: Onome Ebi’s name will echo through the annals of African football history, not just for her records, but for her unwavering commitment to the game she loved.
