Tragedy has struck as a final-year student, who recently celebrated his sign-out from the university, has been confirmed dead just two days after the joyous occasion. The student, identified as Precious A. Briggs, was reportedly shot by alleged cultists outside his school campus in Amassoma.
The heartbreaking incident was shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by a user named Maaloo Dgreat, who also posted about it on his official Facebook page. Expressing his grief, he wrote, “I am heartbroken to hear about your death. The cultists who shot you will never know peace. This is not just a great loss to NIDSUG but to Rivers State. Rest on, Precious A. Briggs.”
Maaloo Dgreat recounted the series of events leading to the tragedy, revealing that the victim was involved in a quarrel and a physical altercation with a cult group. As he turned to leave, he was shot. In a desperate attempt to save his life, his friends rushed him to a nearby hospital. However, shockingly, the hospital reportedly refused to attend to him, leaving those who accompanied him devastated.
The news of the student’s death has sent shockwaves across the university community and beyond. Precious, who had just signed out from school and was preparing for his final project defense in three days, was remembered as a vibrant and promising individual whose life was cut short too soon.
Social media has been awash with reactions to the tragic news. Many who knew Precious have expressed disbelief and sorrow, lamenting the continued presence of cult activities within academic institutions. A user, Saviour Saviour Idungafa, commented, “It’s so shocking to hear this. This was a very gallant comrade in NIDSUG. God have mercy.”
Another social media user, Christine Kyle Ebohimen, voiced her concern about the continued existence of cult groups on campus, saying, “Cultists still exist on campus? I thought they had been eradicated. What a youthful life cut short.”
Emumotimi Bryant Sien also expressed outrage, calling for stricter measures against cult activities: “A Rivers son? It is high time they pull out all cult groups from higher institutions. Initiations should be done after graduation, just like the Pyrate Confraternity.”
Others questioned the victim’s involvement, with Victor Amatu remarking, “It’s unbelievable, I can’t imagine it’s true. This is a very serious matter. What is NDU turning into at the moment? It’s just like a film to my hearing at the moment.” Meanwhile, Raphael Barry raised concerns, stating, “I hope he was not one of the cultists.”
The tragic death of Precious A. Briggs has sparked renewed conversations about campus security and the persistent issue of cultism in Nigerian universities. Many are calling for thorough investigations into the incident and the implementation of stricter measures to curb cult-related violence on campuses.
The university authorities and local law enforcement agencies have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. However, students and members of the university community are urging the administration to take immediate action to ensure the safety of students and put an end to cult-related violence. As investigations continue, the family and friends of Precious are left to mourn a promising life that ended too soon.
