The saga surrounding the death of late singer Mohbad continues to spiral, with activist and social media crusader VeryDarkMan (VDM) now calling for the full release of WhatsApp chat histories from Nollywood actor Jigan Babaoja and music producer Samklef.
The demand, which is already stirring heated reactions online, is VDM’s latest move in what has become a digital war of receipts, accusations, and reputational damage.
At the center of the controversy is a WhatsApp group allegedly created in the immediate aftermath of Mohbad's tragic death in September 2023. The group, said to include celebrities like Iyabo Ojo (as admin), Tonto Dikeh, and others, was reportedly formed to mobilize support and coordinate public messaging for the “Justice for Mohbad” campaign. But VDM alleges that it was also used to orchestrate narratives, blame Naira Marley prematurely, and more alarmingly, to plan his arrest and leak his nude photos in a bid to silence and discredit him.
VDM, who initially got involved in the Mohbad case after spotting inconsistencies in the widow’s testimony, has been on a relentless trail ever since — confronting anyone he suspects of foul play or opportunism.
His latest exposé, a leaked chat implicating Iyabo Ojo, has sparked fresh questions about the true intent behind the campaign that swept the nation in 2023.
Jigan, in a video response delivered in Yoruba, tried to clarify his role, stating he joined the group with good intentions but withdrew after sensing that “the movement was no longer about justice.” However, his statements have done little to ease tensions, as VDM insists that transparency is the only path forward.
“If Jigan and Samklef truly have nothing to hide,” VDM said in a recent post, “they should release the full chat history. Let the world see who said what and when.”
The backdrop to this drama is Nigeria’s broader struggle with justice-by-social-media, where public trials unfold online often before law enforcement concludes any investigation. In Mohbad’s case, the police inquiry has yet to yield conclusive results, while the internet has already tried and convicted multiple parties, fueling threats, smear campaigns, and growing paranoia.
Iyabo Ojo, for her part, has raised concerns about her personal safety, claiming she’s being targeted by a coordinated defamation effort. Meanwhile, Samklef, once a vocal figure in the campaign, has grown more silent — only releasing partial statements and carefully worded tweets.
VDM, whose cyberbullying trial involving Iyabo Ojo and Tonto Dikeh is still ongoing, maintains that the truth is being buried under celebrity PR tactics and influencer politics. With public interest in Mohbad’s death still high, the growing demand for transparency from all involved is mounting.
At the heart of it all remains a haunting question: Was the movement for justice hijacked?
As VDM keeps dropping receipts and demanding accountability, Nigeria watches — not just for justice for Mohbad, but for clarity in a case that increasingly reflects the dark intersection of fame, influence, and manipulation.
