A popular Nigerian TikTok vendor has sparked outrage and concern online after boldly claiming that her herbal concoction can “change your genotype from SS to AA.”

The controversial statement, made in a now-viral video, features the vendor confidently asserting, “My herbs will change your genotype from SS to AA. I have someone who bought it and testify.”

The video has drawn widespread attention, with thousands of views and mixed reactions flooding the comments section.

While some followers appear intrigued or hopeful, medical professionals and genetics experts have raised the alarm, calling the claim “false, misleading, and potentially dangerous.”

Sickle Cell Disease (genotype SS) is a genetic blood disorder inherited from both parents.

According to certified hematologists, there is currently no known herbal or pharmaceutical cure that can genetically alter a person’s genotype from SS to AA.

The only medically approved cure for sickle cell disease remains a bone marrow transplant, which is both rare and highly complex.

Health authorities warn that such unverified claims can mislead vulnerable individuals, especially parents desperate to cure their children or patients seeking relief from the painful effects of sickle cell anemia.

Relying on unproven herbal remedies instead of proper medical care could result in worsening health, delayed treatment, or even death.

Social media users and health advocates have called on Nigerian health regulators and NAFDAC to investigate the vendor and take swift action against the spread of unscientific health misinformation.

Experts also urge platforms like TikTok to enforce stricter rules around false health claims, especially when they involve life-threatening conditions.

Google searches for terms like “Can herbs change SS to AA,” “TikTok herbal cure sickle cell,” and “genotype switching herbs Nigeria” have surged since the video surfaced, reflecting the level of public interest and confusion the claim has generated.

As the video continues to trend, one thing remains clear: genotype cannot be altered by herbs, food, or spiritual claims. Only science-backed treatments and proper medical care should be trusted when it comes to managing or curing sickle cell disease.

The viral claim might gain views, but it’s the lives at risk that truly matter.
