A viral video is currently making waves online after a Nigerian man wearing Meta smart glasses recorded a tense encounter with a police officer who attempted to stop his car and unlawfully search both him and his phone.
In the video, which appears to have been captured without the officer’s knowledge, the man is seen calmly engaging the officer who flagged him down at a checkpoint along a yet-to-be-confirmed road in Nigeria.
Unknown to the officer, the man’s Meta smart glasses were recording every moment in high definition.
The officer reportedly asked for the driver's license and car documents—which the man provided—before suddenly demanding to check the contents of his mobile phone.
The man, clearly aware of his rights, politely refused and began questioning the legality of such a search.
"Why do you want to search my phone, sir? Is that part of the traffic check?" the man asked.
Visibly unsettled but unaware he was being filmed, the officer insisted that it was "routine," but the driver stood his ground, citing constitutional rights and recent directives from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) prohibiting random phone searches by officers without a warrant.
The video has since sparked massive reactions across social media, with many Nigerians praising the man’s courage and commending his use of wearable tech to expose potential abuse of power. Others called on the Nigeria Police Force to retrain officers on citizens' digital privacy rights.
Human rights lawyer and activist, @Segalink, responded to the clip on X (formerly Twitter), writing: "This is why technology is power. No Nigerian should have to fear being profiled or violated by law enforcement. These illegal searches must stop!"
The #StopPhoneSearch hashtag is now trending, as more Nigerians share similar stories of harassment and demand accountability.
As at press time, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue an official statement regarding the video, but sources say the officer’s identity is being investigated following public outcry.
This incident serves as a powerful reminder: in a digital age where every moment can be captured, the abuse of authority is no longer invisible.
