WATCH: Nigerian Police Break Into Building Through Window, Raising Fresh Concerns About Misconduct and Accountability

busterblog - WATCH: Nigerian Police Break Into Building Through Window, Raising Fresh Concerns About Misconduct and Accountability

A new viral video circulating on social media has once again put the Nigerian Police Force under intense public scrutiny.

The footage shows uniformed officers forcefully breaking into a building through a window, using aggressive tactics more reminiscent of a hostage rescue scene than a standard law enforcement procedure.

The clip has reignited nationwide conversations around police professionalism—or the lack thereof.

While the full context of the incident remains unclear, the visual alone has provoked widespread backlash, especially given the Nigeria Police Force’s constitutionally mandated role as the primary institution responsible for public safety and order, as enshrined in Section 214 of the 1999 Constitution.

Rather than inspiring confidence, the officers’ behavior has drawn comparisons to the same heavy-handedness that sparked the #EndSARS movement in 2020.

According to reports from Amnesty International, such displays of excessive force, unprovoked aggression, and illegal entry are not isolated incidents. In fact, they are consistent with documented patterns of police misconduct in Nigeria—including extortion, torture, harassment, and unlawful detention.

The public outrage isn’t just about a window being broken; it’s about a systemic failure to instill professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights among officers.

What makes this particularly troubling is that Nigeria’s Department of Training and Development—tasked with improving the skills, ethics, and efficiency of the police force—has been allocated billions in training funds over the past decade. Yet, scenes like this suggest that either the training is insufficient, poorly implemented, or completely ignored once officers are deployed into the field.

Critics have also pointed out the disturbing contrast between the zealous energy the police apply to low-stakes or petty matters, often involving civilians with no criminal record, and their apparent ineffectiveness in addressing severe crimes like terrorism, kidnapping, and organized banditry. In areas ravaged by violence, such as Nigeria’s northwest and northeast regions, security forces frequently claim they lack the resources or intelligence to pursue deadly gangs—yet somehow manage to mobilize and break windows in urban residential neighborhoods.

This is not the first time Nigeria’s law enforcement has been captured on video engaging in questionable raids, street-level brutality, or improper arrests, but each new incident chips away further at the already fragile public trust. Many Nigerians have responded online with outrage and dark humor, with one user commenting, “The only thing our police force breaks faster than a window is the law itself.”

In the absence of swift disciplinary action and meaningful reform, these incidents serve only to affirm the perception that impunity reigns within the Nigerian Police Force. And until there is transparency, accountability, and proper retraining—backed by political will—Nigerians may continue to see their so-called protectors behaving more like enforcers of fear than guardians of justice.
