Let’s Convert Our Diversity to Prosperity, Says Tinubu

busterblog - Let’s Convert Our Diversity to Prosperity, Says Tinubu

On May 18, 2025, President Bola Tinubu delivered a powerful message to Nigerians, urging the nation to channel its rich diversity into a catalyst for economic growth and national unity.

Speaking in Rome during a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Tinubu emphasized the need to transform Nigeria’s ethnic and religious differences into a unified force for development and stability.

This statement comes at a pivotal moment for Nigeria, a country grappling with economic challenges, social tensions, and a history of diversity-driven conflicts.

Tinubu’s address took place on the sidelines of the historic inauguration of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, where the Nigerian delegation, including prominent Catholic leaders like Archbishops Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja, Alfred Martins of Lagos, and Bishop Mathe Kukah of Sokoto, joined the President.

The event provided a symbolic backdrop for Tinubu’s call for unity, as he described the occasion as a “divine privilege” to lead Nigeria during such a significant global moment.

The newly elected Pope Leo XIV, known for his message of peace and social justice, further amplified the theme of harmony that Tinubu sought to echo in his speech.

Nigeria, with over 250 ethnic groups and a population split between Christianity, Islam, and traditional beliefs, has long struggled to balance its diversity with national cohesion.

Historical events like the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), also known as the Biafran War, highlight the devastating consequences of ethnic divisions.

During that conflict, ethnic minorities such as the Ibibio, Ijaw, and Ogoni, who made up 40% of Biafra’s population, were caught in a struggle that saw atrocities committed on both sides.

The war underscored the challenges of achieving unity in a multi-ethnic society, a challenge that Tinubu now seeks to address through a lens of economic opportunity.

“We must harness it to build a stronger, more united country where everyone feels a sense of belonging,” Tinubu declared, emphasizing that diversity should not be a source of division but a foundation for prosperity.

His vision aligns with Nigeria’s current economic strategies, as the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is set to maintain high interest rates to tackle inflation, which has been a persistent issue, often exceeding 20% in recent years.

By stabilizing the economy, the government aims to create an environment where diverse talents and resources can thrive, fostering industries and innovation across regions.

The Vatican meeting also marked a turning point in the relationship between the Tinubu administration and the Catholic Church in Nigeria.

Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, praised Tinubu for including the bishops in the delegation, seeing it as a gesture of goodwill and a commitment to faith-based collaboration in nation-building.

Ugorji expressed optimism about future engagements, noting that the bishops would invite Tinubu to their conferences in Nigeria, fostering a partnership that could bridge religious divides and promote inclusive development.

Tinubu’s message resonates not only within Nigeria but also on a global stage, as leaders like Pope Leo XIV advocate for peace and dialogue. The Pope’s inaugural blessing, “peace be with all of you,” delivered in Italian and Spanish, reflects a universal call for unity that mirrors Tinubu’s aspirations for Nigeria.

By framing diversity as a strength rather than a liability, Tinubu aims to chart a new path for Nigeria—one where its cultural mosaic becomes the bedrock of a prosperous and harmonious future.

This vision, however, will require more than rhetoric. Nigeria’s history of ethnic tensions, coupled with economic disparities and social unrest, poses significant challenges.

Yet, Tinubu’s call to action offers a hopeful framework, encouraging Nigerians to see their differences as a unique asset in building a nation that thrives on unity and shared prosperity.
