Nigerian-Jamaican Afropop artist Barbee has come forward with shocking details of a brutal assault she suffered during Shatta Wale’s ShattaFest 2025 birthday bash in Accra, Ghana, describing how she was robbed, sexually assaulted, and left bruised in what she called “the darkest night” of her life.
In a video now circulating widely across X and Instagram, the singer, visibly shaken and sporting a swollen eye, recounted how what began as a joyful music celebration quickly descended into chaos. “They beat me, touched me everywhere, stole my passport, phones, and even took $800 from my bag,” Barbee said tearfully. “There were too many people, too much confusion — I couldn’t even scream.”
The attack allegedly occurred late into the night amid a surge of crowd violence near one of the VIP sections at Shatta Wale’s October 19 event, which drew thousands of fans to Accra Sports Stadium. Barbee, known for her collaborations blending Afropop and dancehall, said she attended as a performer and guest but was overwhelmed by the lack of crowd control once the festival spiraled out of hand.
“I came to celebrate music and love,” she lamented, “but instead I was treated like an animal. This is not the Ghana I know, and it’s not the dancehall spirit we stand for.”
Her emotional revelation has triggered widespread sympathy online — and fresh scrutiny over security standards at major Ghanaian entertainment events. While Shatta Wale’s team has yet to issue a detailed statement, eyewitness reports and multiple social media posts from attendees confirm that pickpocketing, scuffles, and harassment were rampant during the festival, with some blaming inadequate police presence.
Gender rights advocates across West Africa have condemned the incident as a wake-up call on safety for women in public spaces, particularly within nightlife and concert settings where law enforcement is often underprepared for crowd surges.
“This case underscores a recurring pattern — women being assaulted at music events with no accountability,” said Ghanaian activist Efua Sarpong in reaction to Barbee’s video. “Whether you’re a local or a foreign visitor, your body should never be up for grabs just because the lights are flashing and the music is loud.”
Barbee’s ordeal adds to a growing list of artist and fan complaints about security lapses at large African music festivals, which have sometimes resulted in injuries, theft, or worse. Despite Ghana’s reputation as one of West Africa’s safest travel destinations, such reports threaten to tarnish its booming entertainment tourism image.
The artist has since confirmed she’s safe but still shaken, calling for stronger protection measures and accountability from event organizers. “I still love Ghana, but this can’t happen again,” she said. “We need real security, not just vibes.”
The post continues to trend across multiple platforms, serving as both a personal outcry and a cautionary tale about the unseen dangers behind Africa’s glittering music scene.
